What to Feed Jellyfish
Feeding jellyfish is easier than you might think. The same foods you would feed corals or small fish work well. Most of which you can buy at your local fish store. While dry foods may be very easy to use and economical I prefer frozen foods. Moisture aids digestion in jellyfish. Here are some suggestions… My first choice is frozen baby brine shrimp from Omega One. It is very good quality and a large cube, a very good value and jellies love it. Reef Nutrition produces R.O.E. that is larger than bbs and jellies like it too. When jellies get larger I will puree’ things too big for jellies to eat. Such as frozen krill, marine plankton or adult brine shrimp, Reef Frenzy from Larrys is a blend of organisms that works well. Similar to a “Salmon Shake”.
TIP: Krill is tough so let it run for a couple minutes. The plankton just needs a quick run.
How to Feed Jellyfish
In a kreisel type jellyfish aquarium like the one we sell, first you take a small cup or container and add aquarium water and food. Allow food to thaw for 5-10 minutes. Stir cup to mix and slowly pour the contents into the aquarium so that it goes into the middle of the viewing area. There the jellyfish can swim through the food and eat it. The food will quickly disperse as the jellies consume it.
How much to Feed Jellyfish
How much to feed jellyfish depends on how many jellies and how large they are. For most tanks one large cube or maybe 3 small cubes per 10, three inch moon jellies per day is good. The rule of thumb is… If your jellies are growing you’re feeding enough if they are not growing they need more food. It should take the jellies about 10 minutes to eat what you have fed. You can feed two three times a day, but jellies can go a couple days without food too. Just feed a little more the day before and the day you return.
